Family Background

My name is Jing-yi Shao. Born in a family with a harmonious atmosphere, I have six members in my family, including my parents, my sister, my brother, and me. My father, a factory worker, works hard to support our family. Unfortunately, my father lost all of his right hand’s fingers when he was working, but he was not disappointed at all. Since I was little, my father has held a positive attitude toward everything and been humorous. Taking thisaccident for example, he wasn’t defeated by it and even made fun of his hand to let us feel relieved. Therefore, when facing obstacles, I tend to look on the bright side and try to deal with them. My mother is also a factory worker. She always asks us to study hard and esteems all my decisions. Thanks for what my mother did, I know that knowledge is important and become more independent. Maybe my family is not perfect in every aspect, but I am very content with what I have now. I love my family very much.

School Life

I am studying at Department of Applied Foreign Languages in National Tainan Commercial Vocational Senior High School. All of my classmates are nice and interesting. We study together and experience many activities and competitions. I really love them and my high school life.

I have served as the class treasure, the hygiene leader, discipline leader and the PE class leader. For me, the most toilful cadre member was the hygiene leader. Some of my classmates were often late for school, so they couldn’t finish their cleaning work. I was always the first person that got to the cleaning place and the last one that left the cleaning place. But I thought it is my duty and I was still grateful that all of them were willing to cooperate with me. At the end of that semester, I received a lot of thank-you cards from my classmates. They all wrote that I was very responsible and thanked for my effort. I was also one of the best cadre members. I was not sure that I really deserved so much praise, but I was very happy for both being this cadre member and for those compliments.

Although majoring in English, my English was not very good at first, I believe that the harder I study, the better I would be. By working hard, my English capability has improved a lot and also passed the elementary level of the General English Proficiency Test. After that, I took the intermediate level of GEPT. I passed the listening and reading tests, but I didn’t pass the oral test. I knew my English ability still left something to be desired. Eventually, in this November, I will take the oral test again and I think I will pass it if I keep practicing my English skills.

Self - Evaluation

I am a warm-hearted, optimistic and outgoing girl. I always teach my classmates Math or English; in addition, when facing difficulties, I tend to look on the bright side and try to deal with them. Wherever and whenever you see me, I always smile; therefore, I have a good interpersonal relationship at school. Even though there is a big challenge for me or there are a lot of things to do, I finish all of them in a pleasant mood and seldom complain. Imperceptibly, “Take things as they come.” has become my motto; I hope that I can keep holding such a healthy attitude toward each challenge.

Besides schoolwork, I also participate in many activities or learn something that interests me. For example, I am interested in playing badminton because my father masters it, so I joined the badminton club in the first year from my high school. There, I not only learned the rules which I hadn’t know before but made a lot of friends. Apart from badminton, I also started learning to play volleyball. At first, I did not have any interest in it, but I gradually found that it is interesting. I like the atmosphere when playing volleyball with the classmates and it also has become one of the essential parts in my high school life.

Future Perspectives

Being one of the greatest technical and vocational education institutions, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology is my ideal university I have been longing for. I will still choose English as my major in college and I think I need further training in all aspects of English skills, especially my oral speaking and listening skills; the Department of Foreign Language of yours offers exactly the courses I need. Although I’m still not sure about my future career, I will equip myself with professional English skills during the four years in college and explore where my interest is and what I can do in the future.

Conclusion

As for my future study plans, I’ll keep sharpening my English essential skills, especially in speaking. I hope one day I can communicate with foreigners naturally and make eye contact to them. Besides English, I’ll also enhance knowledge in Japanese and hospitality and travel in order to enlarge my cognition. Above are all the motivations I have and really hope that I can be admitted to this university.  In the space of four years, I will do my best to achieve my goals, making progress step by step.

Future Perspectives

     I am Lin. Sophia is my English name. I am 18 years old, studying in a public high school. I come from a very happy middle-class family. My father works in a bank and my mother works in a bookstore. I am the only child in the family; however, I am not the so-called spoiled child. My parents have trained me to be independent since I was a child.

Throughout my academic years, I not only get good grades but also am very active on sport field and involved in school club activities. I play volleyball and enjoy the team spirit we have. I have joined the drama club and participated in many English speech contests. I really enjoy participating in school activities; I not only make many friends and have lots of fun but also gain many different valuable experiences.

I had been the class English assistant for almost three years. I liked to discuss and share the experience of learning English with people a lot. We often read China Post and Time Magazine then discussed their contents, the word usages and practice speaking English by discussing the articles we read. In the beginning, we found it hard because we could rarely understand the content, but we encouraged each other not to give up. Gradually, we had made improvement. We were so excited. Then the group discussion of English books and magazines became one of the most enjoyable thing for us to do every week. I won the first prize in the school English speech contest in my second year of high school and many of my English articles had been put on Students Post.

My fondness for English has been developed since my childhood. It is lonely to be the only child. I had no one to play with when I was a kid. My mother knew about this so she brought me with her all the time. Hence, bookstores became my childhood playground and books have been my playmates. Mother would show me those fancy books with cute illustrations on them. Firstly drawn by the pictures, I was curious about these strange symbols called “words.” This was my first contact with English. As I was interested in knowing what those symbol mean, my parents taught me a bit. As they felt that I was eager to learn, they got me an English tutor. Thanks to my parents, I have advantages in learning English by starting at a really early age.

My interest in English brought me to the world of English literature. I have been enchanted by this creative world, so I decide to major in English literature. My aim is to explore the world of literature and the world of great writers, opening my eyes and cultivating my mind through this great world of literature.

Besides English literature, I also have a wide range of hobbies. I love reading, writing, music and movies. I have my active side as well. I enjoy swimming, hiking, traveling and getting close to Nature a lot. I believe we must achieve a sense of balance in our lives. As to my personality, I am creative, optimistic, determined, willing to help others and down to earth.

I want to be one of the literature students who has the privilege of studying great writers’ works and exploring their inner worlds, their outlook of lives, their roles as learned scholars and their influences on the world. My name is Yang. I am 17 years old. My English name is Wendy. There are seven people in my family, and I am the second child among five. My father is the undertaker of a factory and my mother is a housewife. My sister is a university student, while my younger sisters and brothers are junior high school students. Luckily, I have a happy family with open-minded parents and a life with affluent materials.

Since I was a kindergarten student, I have enjoyed singing and dancing very much. Usually, I volunteered to perform in front of the class. I remembered then, I liked to watch variety shows, and that's how I learned to sing popular songs. Those singers and actors who perform in TV programs were my idols. Every time we held the birthday celebration parties for my grandparents, it was I who had to imitate the singers in front of the relatives to amuse everybody. That was the first time I felt entertaining people is such a great enjoyment.

Throughout my school years, I have been an ordinary student on study, but have excellent performances on school activities. Speech, painting, singing contests are altogether my battlefield and the place for me to win my honors. Besides, I have a wide range of hobbies. I enjoy reading novels, seeing movies, swimming, mountain hiking, roller-skating and traveling overseas. Also, I join the badminton and drama clubs. I spend most of my time in the drama club after school, for each of our club members has to undertake the role of both the actors and the staff. There is so much work to do before a play is ready and all of our club members have to contribute ourselves to what we are good at. While working with those vigorous and creative fellows, I never feel tired or bored.

This summer, my drama club had produced a play called “Aladdin” as our graduation ceremony show. I played Aladdin's mother, a comic role in the play with greedy and sarcastic characteristics. Because it is a musical, all the performers had to sing and dance at the same time. And thanks to two professional teachers who volunteered to instruct us, we even did the chorus during the play which was a quartet with fantastic dancing. During the holidays we came to school doing rehearsals and made costumes and props. We did the play very successfully and that was really a wonderful experience. I was so enchanted by this creative stage world that I started to consider seriously whether this is a dream for me to pursue. My parents told me to do what I want but not what I am expected to and this is why I decided to apply for the drama department.

I want to become a stage actress, just like other companions who have the same ideal. To me, a play can not only offer people entertainment, but also, most of the time, provide people with a different point of view toward lives. Compared with those who come from a professional school with fully trained skills, maybe I am far too idealistic and naïve. I know nothing is easy and I think being a drama department student would be a big challenge. I learned a line from my English teacher, which is “Not until you give it a try will you not know the result.” I got passion and expectation to myself, and wish you would give me an opportunity to make my dream come true.

It is very dangerous to meet the person through online dating sites because he or she may not be as perfect as you know. It is easy for people to be what they want to be through the Internet. In addition, some researches show that online dating attracts criminals. In the real life, we are used to protecting ourselves from being robbed or cheated, but the Internet has provided criminals with new victims who are unprotected because of their unfamiliarity with new technology. For example, criminals may look for lonely people to date with on the Net. In general, people forget their common sense, fall in love with them and give out their credit card information or even send money to them. Meeting with the criminals may lead to terrible consequences. It is for all these reasons and more that I believe meeting people through online dating sites is dangerous.

  In my opinion, the death penalty should not be banned as a form of criminal punishment. First of all, the death penalty gives closure to the family members of crime victims. Some victims’ families may spend years or even decades recovering from the sorrow. Some may never recover. Only a death sentence brings finality to those family members. In addition, it creates another form of crime deterrent. Crime will run rampantly if there aren’t some ways to deter people from committing the crimes. Prison time is an effective deterrent, but to some people, more is needed. We should have a variety of punishments in order to minimize crime. Finally, it contributes to the problem of overpopulation in the prisons. Prisons over the world all face the problem of too many prisoners, which results in having insufficient space and resources. Each prisoner requires a part of a prison cell, food, clothing, and so on. When you do away with the death penalty, it means that prisoners must be in prison for life. Thus, it only worsens the problem of being overcrowded in the prisons. It is for all these reasons and more that I believe the death penalty should be used as a form of criminal punishment.

Acton is a small town in the Midwest. Not only does it have a population of 2,500, but it is also a safe, quiet, and clean place to live.  Most of the people have lived there all their lives and know each other very well.  The town has not changed very much in the past 100 years.  As a mayor for twenty years, I have made every effort to make this town more advanced.

  Last month, Stanley Manufacturing decided to open a large factory in Acton.  I am excited about the positive effects the new factory will have.  First of all, it can bring the small town more job opportunities so that the economy of the small town will be better.  Secondly, if the residents had money, they would lead better lives and be able to buy more modern and novel things.  Therefore, their living quality will be advanced.  Finally, more jobs can absolutely attract people and the town will be more bustling.  To sum up, I consider it a good idea to open a factory in this small town and it is bound to bring a lot of good effects to this town.

  Over the past 150 years there has been a huge increase in population.  One reason is that medicine and health care have advanced considerably and sanitation has become better than before.  They have caused fewer infant deaths and more people living longer. Another reason is that improved farming methods have produced more and better food so that people would not need to worry about starving to death.  Economy is another reason that causes a huge increase in population.  If people drawn a large income, they would lead a better life than dying of cold or starvation.  It is for all these reasons and more that has led to the population increase.

  On September 5, Michael Williams opened a small music store selling compact discs, but on December 19, he closed his shop.  There were some reasons for which Williams’ shop was out of business.  The main reason was that the store was located next to lobby on the ground floor of Fairfax Apartment Building which was not only on a small side street just outside of the town, but also three miles away from a shopping center that has two large music stores.  Another reason was that most of the CDs were hip-hop and rock, but the residents of the Fairfax almost aged from 51 to 60; they might not be interested in hip-hop and rock.  The operating hours was another reason that resulted in the failure of the shop. It was open Monday to Friday from 1 to 5 p.m., but the number of people walking past the store was concentrated on the weekend. Finally, Mr. Williams would not accept checks or credit cards, which inconvenienced consumers too much.  It is for all these reasons and more that I think the business failed.

Comparing - 3 ﹝revised﹞

  I have two dogs, Ella and Judy, and they are alike in several ways. Ella's weight is the same as Judy. Besides, Ella's color of fur is similar to Judy as well. The main similarity is that both of them are friendly. Ella loves people, and so does Judy. In addition, both of them are smart and can do a lot of tricks. For example , Ella can stand on the ball. Similarly, Judy can stand on the ball. The most interesting thing is that they are both picky eaters. They only eat the most expensive dog food. Because of them, my life is full of joy and laugh every day. I really love them and can't live without them.

Contrasting - 2 ﹝revised﹞

There is a vacant position with an instructor, and there are two people, Lynn Whitnal and Debra Fines, who come out on top in the final section.  I've decided to hire Lynn Whitnal as a consequence of the following reasons.  First of all, although Lynn Whitnall has less education than Debra Fines about English, she had been English instructor, so I think she has enough professional knowledge to take this job. Second, her experience is less than Debra Fines, but I think it is enough. Third, Lynn Whitnall is fluent in more languages than Debra Fines. Finally, she had got the Excellent in Teaching Award in 2004, but Debra Fines hadn't. Therefore, I consider that she can teach better than Debra Fines. To sum up, maybe Debra Fines knows more than Lynn Whitnall, but I think teaching ways atr of central importance. Thus, I choose Lynn Whitnall to be the English instructor.

Another reason is that improved farming methods have produced more and better food so that people would not need to worry about starving to death.  Economy is another reason that causes a huge increase in population.  If people drawn a large income, they would lead a better life than dying of cold or starvation.  It is for all these reasons and more that has led to the population increase.

  We can view online dating as a negative point. First of all, in chat rooms, on dating websites and on discussion forums, people meet strangers naturally just like in the offline world and fall in love with each other easily. It is very dangerous to meet the person through online dating sites because he or she may not be as perfect as you know. It is easy for people to be what they want to be through the Internet. In addition, some researches show that online dating attracts criminals. In the real life, we are used to protecting ourselves from being robbed or cheated, but the Internet has provided criminals with new victims who are unprotected because of their unfamiliarity with new technology. Criminals look for lonely people to date with them on the Net. In general, people forget their common sense and give out their credit card information or even send money to them because of the unfamiliarity and friendship.   In my opinion, the death penalty should not be banned as a form of criminal punishment. First of all, the death penalty gives closure to the family members of crime victims. Some victim's families may spend years or even decades to recover from the sorrow. Some may never recover. Only a death sentence brings finality to those family members. In addition, it creates another form of crime deterrent. Crime would run rampantly if there isn’t some way to deter people from committing the acts. Prison time is an effective deterrent, but to some people, more is needed. We should have a variety of punishments in order to minimize crime. Finally, it contributes to the problem of overpopulation in the prisons. Prisons over the world all face the problem of too many prisoners, which results in having insufficient space and resources. Each prisoner requires a part of a prison cell, food, clothing, and so on. When you do away with the death penalty, it means that prisoners must be in prison for life. Thus, it only worsens the problem of an overcrowded in the prisons. It is for all these reasons and more that I believe the death penalty should be used as a form of criminal punishment.

I could still remember that the train was red and was steam-powered. The locomotive seemed awesome and looked like a monster to me. There were a lot of people at that time, and no seats were left empty. I enjoyed the view outside the window, and the scenery was magnificent. The train arrived at the halfway station in the afternoon, and we could get off the train for a while and took some pictures together with the beautiful sunset and clouds. Everytime I opened my photo album, I couldn't help retrospecting those unforgettable moments we had there. I guess nothing would substitute those sweet moments in my early childhood, and I should never forget that precious time.
